Climate Change

  1. What do you personally find most troubling about climate change?
    1. Overall, the impact of climate change is most troubling. As temperatures continue to rise, water levels and agriculture are directly affected. The devastating impact this has on human kind and the environments we inhabit are troubling. Climate change can cause our agriculture system to collapse; making access to food more difficult. As seen over the last couple of years, climate change can drastically affect the weather and strength of storms. These instances of direct impact climate change and how it threatens the environment and humans is very troubling. Therefore, more research and investments should be made into reducing climate change.
  2. As a public health professional, what do you think needs the greatest attention right now?
    1. With regards to climate change, I believe awareness and education are important and need attention. Lack of knowledge on climate change and how to prevent climate change in great need of attention. Additionally, there needs to be more affordable ways for everyone to take action against climate change.
  3. If you were visiting with a long-lost relative who had never heard about climate change, how would you describe it and its attendant human health and ecological threats?
    1. I would first discuss the visible changes that have already started to occur. I would point out the strength of storms, rising water levels, and increase in temperature.  Then I would explain the science behind humans and how their actions affect the surrounding environment. Once explained, I would inform this person on ways to help reduce their carbon footprint and contribution to climate change.

  1. Hi Ryan,

I agree with you 100%! It has become more and more real over the last decade and this topic is very relevant now with all of the wildfires happening in California. In San Francisco, the sky has been visibly filled with smoke for almost a week now and people have been staying indoors, wearing masks, etc. I bring this up because I feel like times like this (when people are paying attention and have visible evidence) is when we need to push education and raise awareness about climate change. We should take the opportunity to explain that these devastating wildfires and storms are directly related to global warming.

  2. Hi Ryan! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I also agree with you about all your statements. There needs to be more investment and research in these areas since the problem seems to be worsening. These topics are very relevant since there are many disasters occurring around the nation. I feel that due to the wildfires in California the awareness is present but people don't know what to do or how to help. I like your explanation, I think this is a good start to gage your family members position and understanding of these environmental issues that threatens our human and ecological health.
