Environmental Justice

How does this fit into the concept of "social determinants"?  How does it connect to the "Black Lives Matter" movement?

Environmental Justice should listed under the physical environment section of the social determinants of health. Throughout history, there have been a number of health related issues in neighborhoods of low income or ethnic/non white races. Specifically in the South, it seems that these neighborhoods are less priority for the city.  Additionally, racial issues, including disparities among neighborhoods and the environment safety of the neighborhood, are still issues. The Black Lives Matter movement is to protect all lives and shed light on the injustice and disparity between African American lives and non African American Lives. This connects to the movement because generally lower income, predominantly African American neighborhoods suffer from injustices not only related to gun violence.

  1. Yes! I agree that this should under the physical environment section of the social determinants of health. I definitely agree that there at disproportionate health inequities in the south and that this is strongly affecting our African American communities.

  2. Hi Ryan,

The topic of environmental justice is so frustrating to me because there are so many things that I wish I could do but at times feel so powerless. I'm sure many people feel this way, but we can't give up! Just about every health condition is related to that individual's environment and other social/economical aspects. We as health professionals need to come up with creative ways and policies that inform others about these injustices and create change.
